Allow me to introduce myself,
I, Courtnee Cotton. Am a 28 year old black woman from Detroit, MI who was compelled to start Creek Consulting as a result of my own plight and struggle with credit & financial literacy or lack thereof.
I didn’t always have the wealth of knowledge and resources that I do now. I didn’t always care about my credit or how it affected me until I realized how far a little information and my Will could take me. Specifically, what I mean is the benefit of not only having good credit but knowing how to maintain it and use it to my advantage.
There was a time that I didn’t realize that having poor credit could keep me from getting the job I wanted until it happened. There was a time that I didn’t realize how my low credit was keeping me from accessing reliable transportation due to extremely high & unaffordable monthly payments as a result of it. But the biggest one for me was not realizing that having at least decent credit could’ve changed my life when I made the decision to go into Real Estate and wanted to flip my first property. The numbers were spot on and the deal was a no brainer but I didn’t have the capital or the credit to close the deal.
It was then that I knew I had to make a change and I would not rest until my score was at least a 650, which may not seem like a lot but it was all I needed to make $40K on my first major real estate deal. Having a score of just 650 would’ve afforded me the luxury to leverage my credit and spend $0 to make $40,000.
THAT is the power of credit. That is how I gained an understanding of the power of credit. My own life experiences. I missed out on this undeniably life changing opportunity due to poor credit and a lack of knowledge. And that is why I started my company. Cause had I known then what I know now I would’ve gotten a lot further a lot quicker. Shortly after this tough lesson I started learning about how to improve my credit, studying credit laws and even started disputing and working on my own credit. It wasn’t easy and it took my quite a while because at first I was afraid to get started and tried many different avenues and failed first. But I was determined.
So many assume that having good credit is only for having access to material things at low prices, which is nice don’t get me wrong. But credit for me is about so much more. For me it’s personal. For me it’s about what I can teach my daughter and the knowledge that can be passed down from generation to generation. It’s about leveraging my credit to build wealth and as a result have a legacy to leave to my loved ones. It’s about security.
So I want to ask, what might good credit or even just "average" credit do for you? How can improving your credit change your life?
If you have the answer to that question already then great. Maybe you’re ready to get started maybe you already have. But if you don’t know the answer to that question maybe it’s time you start evaluating your life.
Either way, I’m here to help.
